    But the Gulf of Mexico is a killer. From now on, whenever a tropical storm or a weak hurricane enters the Gulf, and is going to a few day hike across, we have to hope it won't hit the land with maximal strength... It is almost automatic, pending some lucky trajectories or wind sheers...

    It is rather simple: if the waters of the Gulf were not that warm, the hurricanes would not gain big strength that easily. On the other hand, the waters of the the Gulf would not be that warm if the summer weather would not get hotter. Go figure.

      It's emblematic of the era -- catastrophic, cascading change.

      Things are starting to happen faster than we can update old models, never mind conceive of them.

      It's only Nero-esque if the city is burning. :)
