Dems may visit the website of Annie Duke, the best female professional poker player in the world. Especially the last two articles can be very useful:

Lessons From the FBI (about catching smirking liars)

Playing the Maniac (playing those who raise and bluff far too often)

    •  Thanks for the links. Good reading. (4.00)
    •  Can (4.00)
anybody into Pro poker answer me this?

If poker is supposed to be about reading people's expressions, why do all the players get to wear ridiculous shades / ski goggles?

In the UK we get several cable channels that show this dross, as well as a couple of the main TV channels.

Some of the headgear on display makes me think one day i'll tune in and there'll be someone sat there in a medieval Knights helmet.

      •  Good point (4.00)
        they shouldn't allow sunglasses.

If you can't control your tics and googly eyes, then too bad Jack....

      •  Too late (4.00)
If you watch the final event at this year's WSOP on ESPN, you'll no doubt see the man who has a full-sized "Tickle Me Elmo" head that he puts on every time he plays his hand.

If poker is supposed to be about reading people's expressions, why do all the players get to wear ridiculous shades / ski goggles?

Your question assumes that the only place to "read" a person is in his or her face.  Not so.  Plenty of other things -- hands (moving, or not) arms (folded? at side?) posture (sitting up? slouching?).

And, poker pros all time just ask a question (any question) and "read" how the person answers.

I agree that the full head cover ought to be banned, but, while the eyes maybe the window to the soul, there are other routes to finding out what your opponent holds.

        •  Posture (4.00)
is very important. People have ticks, nervous habits, actions they repeat under certain circumstances like if they have a great hand. The way they hold their cards, cross their arms, lean their head, etc.

My worst nights at poker tables were when I wasn't decisive. Sometimes, you just have to play that 3-7 offsuit and see what flops.

If players think they can push you around because you're wishy-washy, they will.

          •  OK (4.00)
I understand there are myriad ways to read body language so why do these pro poker players insist on wearing ridiculous shades / hats and various other things that make them look like they're auditioning for a lead role in Spy Vs Spy?

    •  Recommend the web site . . (4.00)
. . . but many would take issue with the characterization of Annie Duke as the best female poker player in the world, including:

      Cyndi Violette
      Jennifer Harman
      Katrina Jett
      Clonie Gowen
      Kathy Liebert

      etc.

    •  Annie Duke rocks! (4.00)
I think the spouse has a crush on her...which is okay since I call Keith Olbermann my imaginary 2nd husband...
