Abramoff is a right-wing orthodox Jew who paid for paramilitary equipment and sniper workshops for the Israeli Defense Force, and started and maintained  a private Orthodox jewish boys school in Maryland. He had enough umphf and influence in the American Jewish  community that he could e-mail  a prominent rabbi and get him to fabricate a bogus backdated award: "perhaps something like Scholar of Talmudic Studies?" for the purpose of padding his resume for nomination to the Cosmos Club: Mr. Latham (ph), is, "Yes. I just need to know what needs to be produced. Letters? Plaques? Neither?" were the  words the rabbi was reported to have written in response to Abramoff's email request, from Senate testimony before McCain's investigative committee earlier this year.

Abramoff may be a fixer/bagman, but I doubt it is for any real Saudis concerned with advancement of Islamic people, or for any honest Islamic interests. It is antithetical to Abramoff's background and past associations and passionate causes.

If anything, he may have been involved with Atta in some kind of false-flag or set-up.  Abramoff has been most likely acting in the capacity of a US rightwing/neocon or Israeli covert agent, not a Saudi agent. He was working for the Apartheid era South African Secret Service  during the time when Israel and the repressive Aparteid S Africa pariah government had a close security and trade relationship, and the two countries were doing joint nuclear weapons development & testing See Vela incident.

The Jewish hard liners do not agree on this one.

Methinks Abramoff's last straw in Horowitz' eyes was to lobby for Saleh Kamel and to get someone from indicted terrorist Alamoudi's AMC council in Homeland Security and in Gitmo

    •  I pointed this out upthread (4.00)
But one of the missed connections of Iran-Contra is that the people who were thrilled to be funding the Contras because they were freedom fighters fighting Communism were also the people who were thrilled to be funding the mujahadeen because they were freedom fighters fighting communism. The only difference was that they could fund the muj somewhat legally, whereas with the Contras they had to launder money.

These people never adequately rethought their understanding of the Contras nor, I would imagine, have they really left their understanding of the muj completely behind.

And, by association the people funding the Contras and the muj have had, at the least, close ties to the Israelis.

When you forget all the history, the thought that an orthodox Jew would fund things Islamic. But when you remember the history, it's not a stretch in the least.

      •  Let's not forget the key part of Iran Contra (none)
involved Israel, acting as a proxy/conduit, selling Iran arms and spare parts in the mid 1980's to re-supply and maintain Iran's largely US sourced planes, guns and military equipment in working order while the Iranians were fighting against the US supported Saddam's Iraq.

It is very doubtful that Israel would have participated in this transaction with Iran if they did not perceive a net benefit to Israel's own regional interests, such as keeping two strong neighbors fighting each other,  and weakening each other in the process.

        •  Precisely my point (none)
All this that seems impossible now was eminently possible in the 1980s.

And one part of Israeli support for Iran, back in the days, was a notion of periphery support. If they could keep the non-Arab states on the periphery of the ME strong, than it would keep the Arab states right next to Israel from attacking Israel.
