      I think it's a nice followup to Bush's speech.  We don't give those people enough credit--they are so good at manipulating the media.

        The delay in announcing the threat allegedly gave U.S. forces in Iraq time to attack some target "south of Baghdad".

      •  The FBI said they held the public announcement (4.00)
        of the alert for two days in order to give the city time to put safeguards in place before they let the public (and, one assumes, the terraists) know they had been tipped off. Or so they said.

        It's quite possible this is a threat. But it's even more possible that Bush got word of this too, and decided to ratchet up the apprehension level by giving a hastily thrown-together speech with his favorite cut-and-paste buzzwords, so that the non-blog-reading public's collective blood pressure will be sufficiently high enough for this latest tidbit to push them over the edge.

        Priming the pump, so to speak.

        Bush had a full day to duck in there on network TV and give his speech after he was told of this latest intelligence, and he took full advantage. He knows the only way his numbers spike is if he's got the country scared to death.

      According to sources in intelligence, emergency services and police headquarters, when three Iraqi insurgents were arrested several days ago during a raid by a joint FBI-CIA team, one of those caught disclosed the threat. Because it slipped out during the arrest, the plot was deemed credible
