    ...(as you appear to know) learning to write well isn't simply the acquisition of skills.  One of the reasons so few entering college can write well, in fact, is that teachers in middle school and high school have been concentrating too much on skills and too little on writing-as-communication.

    People like Peter Elbow have been pounding the table for years, trying to get us to pay attention to the fact that, to write well, one has to have something to say.  But too few are listening.

    Do you know what one of the most heartening developments for writing pedagogy is, by the way?

    The blogs!

    Through these danged things people are starting to realize that they do have things to say and that others will respond.
