    You did a great job of explaining the same concept I tried to get across upthread.  That's exactly it - 6th graders are expected to function like high schoolers when some (many?) of them are simply not ready.

    Sadly, our son is a perfect example of someone who was too immature to make it in middle school in spite of intensive support at home.  Even more sadly, I know dozens of kids like him whose academic and behavioral problems started in middle school - and when their alarmed parents asked the school for help - were told "they just have to try harder."
