  •  What is the purpose behind tagging??? (none)
Thanks to anyone who can tell me.
    •  It's massively distributed indexing (none)
The index systems you see in libraries have been created with great effort by professional librarians, and it would take a lot of work for a single individual to do the same to Daily Kos.  But if a large number of people do a little bit, the site can be indexed with relative ease, especially if everyone indexes their own diaries when they create them. Search engines help if you haven't got an index, but:

      1. Daily Kos's search engine is not very good: it's slow and frequently returns false zero hits.

      2. search engines find too much; they don't know if "bush" refers to the president or to a feature of somebody's garden.  An index created by a real human being gets around this problem.
