    •  Here's a relevant addition : The L Curve (4.00)
      SOURCE:

The L Curve, By David Chandler

"The US population is represented along the length of the football field, arranged in order of income.

Median US family income (the family at the 50 yard line) is ~$40,000 (a stack of $100 bills 1.6 inches high.)

--The family on the 95 yard line earns about $100,000 per year, a stack of $100 bills about 4 inches high.

--At the 99 yard line the income is about $300,000, a stack of $100 bills about a foot high.

--The curve reaches $1 million (a 40 inch high stack of $100 bills) one foot from the goal line.

--From there it keeps going up...it goes up 50 km (~30 miles) on this scale!"

Also, data on the amount of total US wealth owned by the top 1% or 1/2 of 1% in the US is very striking - and the extent to which those top economic elites have increased their share of national wealth in the last 20 years.

The US CIA has some good data on GINI indexes around the world and used to have some material, on their website, on the link between high GINI's and social/political instability : in that, absolute levels of wealth seems to matter little. What tends to produce inter-societal stress and conflict ( not surprisingly ) are high GINI indexes, not wealth or poverty per se.

      Thanks for the diary.
