  •  Well said, Mr Smith (none)
Of course you don't fail to see that, eyeswideopen's eyes were bizarrely closed to what you had to say.I think this is an astounding difference between US and UK societies (having experienced both). You Americans place too much faith in faith, for whatever reason. We Brits, on the other hand, are too sceptical and are largely too quick to disparage people of devout faith, being mostly exposed to our strange metaphysical wishy-washy Anglican faith. My favourite quote about Anglican bishops: Half of them don't believe in the Church, the other half of them don't believe in the Bible. Fwiw, I say this as an atheist Anglican.
    •  Where (none)
... in the above thread and before your comment, is found any trashing of theists?

I don't think I accused anyone of trashing theists, certainly I did not mean to. Bus since you ask, you said this: It would be lovely if theists would learn as much about us as we have had to learn about them.  Then perhaps understanding can commence. That is at least condescending, and in my experience inaccurate. Perhaps we have met different sorts of Christians.
        •  I understand how hard (none)
...it must be for those of a majority to experience how the minority has views them.  I recall how I felt when, as a kid, I read The Autobiography of Malcolm X and could begin to see how whites were viewed by African Americans.  I treasure the knowledge and understanding that evolved.

I give you the respect of honesty.  We have been inundated with theism in culture, even when we'd very much rather not be.  The type of theism that is dominant in the United States is one that values the acquisition of converts, which we regard as highly disrespectful, peeing on our side of the fence, if you will.  We are insulted consciously and unconsciously by theists constantly, not unlike unconscious racism or sexism. Theists often express great difficulty accepting the possibility of the existence of morality in nontheists.  We do have our own history, and a very long one it is.

I have met many, many different types of theists over my long life.  For an example, perhaps you'd humor me by reading my diary on the subject, http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/10/11/155037/14
