I really empathize.  I was raised in an atheist family that kept to itself.  I always had an outsider sort of feeling about Christmas, Easter, pledge of allegiance, and endless daily references to something we did not share.  I recall being a small child in grade school when a kid during recess came up to me and showed me a picture in a bible of a tortured Jesus bleeding on the cross. He said, in that conspiratorial way of kids looking at porn, "This is what we believe in."  A highly empathic and sensitive child who loved animals and shunned all forms of violence, I was shocked and utterly horrified.  I'll never forget that moment.  It was my introduction to the dominant religious culture.
