  •  We're NOT a Democracy! (4.00)
And thats a good thing! I should think that we all would have learned our lessons about immediate gratification of the whims of the masses last election! The House is by far the most democratic branch of government, up for total upheaval every two years with each state represented by the population. How has that worked out for us in the past 10 years?
The Senate is where we keep the power of the minority to have the slightest influence, precisely because it IS undemocratic. We live in a Republic, not a democracy, and have fundamental constraints on the whims of mob rule that have served us well over the years, not as well as we would have hoped, but well enough.
Above all, I suspect that if we lived in a true democracy, where the massive evangelical machine could turn out in off-year elections to give the Repugs dominating majorities in the entire federal government, Miers, bridges, drilling, etc, would be the start of the slow spiral into Dante's rings of hell. Thank our Founding Fathers for allowing us to stop that.

Some men see things as they are and ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask, Why Not? ~Robert F. Kennedy
