I've just spent time following up on this and it's a great resource.  For any who suspect this will be an issue (as I do), here's a great starting point.

There's the detailed description of Fitz's authority including links to all docs via GAO.  Bookmark it.

There could still be a dismissal. Fitzgerald could fight it, the Bush administration could argue that Comey's charter for Fitz was an "unconstitutional delegation of authority."

The idea that a special prosecutor cannot be fired by anyone at all, in any branch of government, is actually pretty frightening.

    •  Great info, thanks. (none)
Clearly, Bush cannot, a la Nixon telling Elliot Richardson to fire Archibald Cox, try to get Comey to fire Fitz.  He'd have to do it himself. (As head of the Executive Branch, I think that Bush retains the legal power to fire him regardless of the GAO's efforts to insulate Fitz.) But regardless of whether it was legal, as a practical matter, it would be the equivalent of signing his own articles of impeachment.

Fitz is like "a GOD unto" all those puny prosecutor wannabee's and wormy defendants beneath him! Bush's "One God" ain't got a thing on him.

The next prez better start polishing up the medals for Fitz and Comey.
