I was fuelled by rage to actually post a diary.  Very uncharacteristic of me.

Americans need to know that the kossacks who post here are not the only ones who are enraged - it is a dispute that is truly damaging the way Canadians perceive the US.  And nothing's fucking getting done about it!  The admin just keeps stonewalling and thumbing their noses at legal rulings like criminals!  The American people and the American media are not holding them to account for this shabby treatment of the USA's largest trading partner!

I, like many Canadians, talk about the situation in the US. There's been anger before, resentment before, but there's a certain note of finality to it this time that I've never encountered before this administration.

General perception here is, no matter how bad it gets, a house-clearing will come every 4 years or so and the pendulum will swing the other way. Now though, that basic assumption is being challenged.

Support of the Iraq war, rising and antagonistic anti-lectualism, pro-torture, rising fashion of vigilanteism, the jingoism... it's dawning on people here that far more people SUPPORT these policies than we're comfortable with, even if that support is tacit approval by lack of voting against it (although we also believe that your last two elections' results are shadier than Iran's).

Many people are giving up hope on your country as a whole, and rather identifying with particular regions... for example, a friend who was over the other day (ex-military, no less!) declared that New England was the only portion of the states he could tolerate, and the rest of it could disappear without him shedding a tear. Others have commented on how much coastal people in California, Oregon and Washington state have more in common with BC to the north than to the states to the east.

I suspect that given a decade or so of solid, reasonable governance and serious inroads made against the rising tide of nationalism might change that perception. I don't think anything short of that would reverse some of this recent damage.

Particularly the torture thing. You guys have no idea how much that messed up people's heads here.

The fact that Democrats like Baucus support the administration's position, and in fact want to distribute the criminal proceeds to US lumber companies is yet more evidence that the US political system as a whole has a tremendous animus against Canada - or at least feels no compunction about abusing us.

I honestly think that most Americans couldn't possibly care less about Canada and would happily strip our country bare if it meant continuing their country's economic hegemony.  I'm sorry, but all the evidence points to that conclusion.
