Alberto Gonzales would be the exact wrong move for Bush now.  His smokescreen for withdrawing the Miers nomination is that he doesn't want to provide documents regarding the advice she gave him.  How can he nominate Gonzales without providing documents, especially on the torture issue?  Miers' nomination was killed by the religious right, who is already on record as opposing Gonzales.  They think they are in control now.  They expect the next nominee to be a wingnut.  And 90 Senators recently voted for teh McCain amendment to outlaw torture.
