So I have to read right-wing propaganda to understand the true genius of Daschle?

Why can't I read about his heroics in the liberal press?  Isn't that where we should be exalting our fearless Senate leader?

Oh now I remember, Daschle isn't a liberal!  That's why I've no use for him.

but its always good to run with enemy information...

Its in the nature of punditry to assume that they can do it better.  Think armchair general.  Daschle has done some kickass stuff.

The other thing is that lots of what the Senate party leaders do doesnt make them look too virtuous.  Daschle is an attack dog, and he doesnt want to be seen that way.  Hes also a strong speaker (far better than Nancy Pelosi after the State of the Union).  Furthermore, he earns the respect of moderates, for whatever reason.  Liberals may get mad at him once in a while, but often Daschle gives up very little while looking like hes making a compromise.

And finally - You try to do better with a 51 member majority when 4 of those members are Zell Miller, Ben Nelson, Bill Nelson, and Max Baucus.  Baucus and Bill Nelson he can get to fight with him some of the time, but Ben Nelson is more difficult and Zell Miller is clearly impossible.  In short, the Senate majority sucked.  Republicans are much better at keeping everyone in line because in the words of Newt Gingrich...  "There are a select minority of people who believe all the same things.  We call them republicans.  Everyone else is a Democrat."  Gingrich may be a nutless bastard, but hes right on this one.

Dems need every seat they can get this time around.  Probably also in 2006 to have a shot at taking the senate back.

[whisper]The time to replace Daschle is at the start of the 2005 session.  A demotion now would likely defeat him, and dems may not win this seat back for 3-5 terms, given the redness of SD prez electoral politics.[/whisper]

Even Newt admits that Democrats are democrats.
