    •  That's Bushspeak (none)
Let me expand.  I think we should concentrate on universal health care, a much more urgent problem, before we concentrate on universal pre-school.  Universal health care, Head Start, Pell Grants, after-school programs, child care subsidies (not through the tax code), Earned Income Tax Credit, and public transportation are where I think we need to spend the money now.

      •  Down with the Concord Coalition (none)
We can fund Head Start, Pell Grants and expanded kindergarten.  It's Keynesianism, not at all Bushism.

The problem with some of your goals is that they are not doable (universal health care) or not politically helpful (Pell Grants).

        •  Ummm ... (none)
Increasing the maximum Pell Grant award isn't politically helpful?  Sure, it's not as politically helpful in the short term as the Hope Scholarship Tax Credit, the Lifetime Learning Tax Credit, the college tuition tax deduction, etc.  Those tax credits and deduction I mentioned do not help the poor, and empower colleges -- and not students.  Just look at how the price of college has risen over the last 10-15 years as we have expanded middle-class tax incentives to go to college and have let Pell Grants cover a lower percentage of a student's higher education expenses.  Does that tell you anything?  Pell Grants work, and in the long run, we will increase the number of Democratic seats in Congress if we demonstrate our policies work, and are not merely for short-term political gain.

Also, my education ideas are dramatically less expensive than yours are, and are much more effective than yours are.  The politics will take care of itself.

          •  Decreasing Pell Grants (none)
            hasn't been particularly harmful.

It's not effective if it isn't inacted.
