  •  This is how we win: Making government work again (4.00)
Over and over in this thread we hear the same thing: how incompetent and ineffective Republicans have become. And I think the root of their incompetence is their hatred of government. How can you run effectively the very thing you despise?

Republicans see government as only one of two things:

    1. A stepping stone toward work in the private sector
    2. A means to practice power and reward those who put them into power

When such self-interest guides your decisions, the people who are supposed to be served -- all citizens rather than merely campaign supporters -- will suffer.

Republicans across the country have taken the White House as their example of how to govern and the rest of the country has caught on. They want competent, effective, and concerned stewards running the government their tax dollars pay for.

    •  A government as good as the people (4.00)
Our message in 2006 should involve some sort of call for government reform after twelve years of GOP control of Congress and state/local offices. It is time for a change and we should tie Bush and other more prominent Republicans around the necks of state/local Republicans as sympatizers.

If the people want pork barrel spending and government inefficiency, vote Republican. If you want fraud, abuse and scandal, vote Republican. If you want activist judges who will turn back the clock and repeal the entire 20th century, choose Republican. If you enjoy lies and deception, if you enjoy fake populism with a posh country club accent, push a button for a Republican. (Maybe your vote will finally count!) Finally, if you are so concerned about abortion and gay marriage as to let schools, roads, corporations and politicians be sucked into an empty vacuum where integrity and accountability don't exist, feel free to vote Republican while you still can.

Republicans pretend to be leaders, posing with soldiers and spending money on slick campaigns to soothe criticism. But leadership goes beyond simply lifting your shirtsleeves - it involves doing dirty work. If you want true leadership, vote Democratic because democracy starts at home.

    •  The other thing that happens... (none)
with these local elections as well, is that when new blood is introduced on the town or village councils, there are appointments that they typically get to make for boards and committees, that get made. One town council seat means at least one or more additional seats on things like parks and recreation, historic preservation, planning and zoning, water boards, whatnot.

Much more far-reaching than people typically understand.
