    Hi Jim

I am sure you are aware of the most recent Bill O'Reilly gaff...The one in which he invites al Qaeda to bomb the Coit Towers in San Francisco...
From the November 8 broadcast of Fox News' The Radio Factor with Bill O'Reilly:

O'REILLY: Hey, you know, if you want to ban military recruiting, fine, but I'm not going to give you another nickel of federal money. You know, if I'm the president of the United States, I walk right into Union Square, I set up my little presidential podium, and I say, "Listen, citizens of San Francisco, if you vote against military recruiting, you're not going to get another nickel in federal funds. Fine. You want to be your own country? Go right ahead."

And if Al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we're not going to do anything about it. We're going to say, look, every other place in America is off limits to you, except San Francisco. You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead.

As you can imagine, this is causing quite a bit of a stir...stunning in this day and age in which any kind of comment like that can be construed as beyond the  pale...

I am wondering what your take is on this matter...much ado about nothing?...Tempest in a teapot?...

This is my take of it...As you can well imagine, I am no fan of O'Reilly...and as such when my TV or radio dial lands on one of  his programs, I quickly move on...well sometimes I will stay a little while...almost as a test of my liberal tolerance for a diversity of views...but move on thinking he is hard, arrogant, and a bit scary...

But this is different...not the usual muddled  rant...it goes well beyond that...and by coincidence, Carole was in San Francisco to meet-up with a classmate whom she has not seen since graduation some 50 years ago. They stayed at a hotel last night in the Union Square district and were out and about sight-seeing today...But somehow, I didn't take her safety for granted as I always have up to this point...

It was as if O'Reilly had drawn a bullseye on the Union Square district...These utterances do not go unnoticed by al Qaeda...They do look for targets that give maximum effect for the self-risks involved...O'Reilly just served one such target up to them...

I think that even for the Republican Right, O'Reilly has in one fell swoop become a significant liability...Consider this, that if such an al Qaeda attack were to come to pass...and the Republican Right has taken a bemused, "Oh, that's just O'Reilly being O'Reilly" position on this...then ...not a very far out scenario given the times we are living in...

Just  imagine Howard Dean saying such a thing  about...say Dallas Texas...Can you imagine that he  would  be  able to hold his position?...I think not...He would be dumped like a hot potato...and rightfully so...
