    I always thought he was forced on the party establishment by the grassroots. Was I wrong?

      ...in the sense that there certainly was big grassroots support for Dean as DNC Chair.

      But I would say "forced" goes a bit too far. Though many of the other candidates were indeed "establishment darlings" (like Fowler's kid), there was not a concerted effort to oppose Dean with a McAuliffe-like alternative. Something the money-side certainly had the capacity to do.

      I have no factual explanation for why not, but I'm nagged by the suspicion that Howard "made the deal" soon after Iowa, and that this was part of it.

      His exit from the primaries has never made sense to me.
