  •  line of succession (none)
The current law says that cabinet level secretaries in the presidential line of succession are ranked in the order that their cabinet offices were created.  Since Homeland Security is the newest cabinet level office, then Michael Chertoff is last in line.

Last summer the Senate passed a bill moving the Homeland Security secretary up to eighth in the presidental line of succession, right after the Attorney General.  The House still has to approve this.

nothing about the Governor of Florida, although I wouldn't put aything past them.

    current line:

    • The Vice President Richard Cheney
    • Speaker of the House John Dennis Hastert
    • President pro tempore of the Senate Ted Stevens*
    • Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
    • Secretary of the Treasury John Snow
    • Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld
    • Attorney General Alberto Gonzales
    • Secretary of the Interior Gale A. Norton
    • Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns
    • Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez (not native born and ineligible)
    • Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao (not native born and ineligible)
    • Secretary of Health and Human Services Mike Leavitt
    • Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Alphonso Jackson
    • Secretary of Transportation Norman Yoshio Mineta
    • Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman
    • Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings
    • Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson
    • Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff

*The president pro tempore presides over the Senate when the vice president is absent. By tradition the position is held by the senior member of the majority party.

In the new line of succession, Chertoff would move up the list right after Abu Gonzales and before Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton.

BTW, one official in the line of succession is always asked to skip the State of the Union address so that if a terror attack or other catastrophe occured wiping out the whole cabinet there would be someone left to assume the presidency.

Politics is like driving. To go backward, put it in R. To go forward, put it in D.

What a bunch of crooks!  Impeachment won't do a whole lot of good with that lot waiting in the wings.

Our only hope lies with the next two election cycles - re-take Congress next year and then get rid of those crooks in the Executive branch in 2008.

We've got our work cut out for us folks - let's get busy eh?
