  •  Miers wasn't the thing that broke Bush (4.00)

Aggregated nationwide, Bush has steadily lost support among both Conservatives and Pro-Life subsets as well.  No bounce from nominating Alito.

Nice diary.  Your final quote, IMHO, is highly important.  It underscores the fact that the Miers nomination was not the thing that lost support for Bush; rather, it was the final nail in the proverbial coffin.  Something collectively happened before Miers which lost Bush and the GOP support from the media powers that be, and independents.

While there are some who stubbornly cling to Bush, and to a wider extent the GOP, it certainly appears that the dubious "empire" they've built is crumbling in more ways than one.

    •  I nominate: Katrina (none)
As the woman who brought down Bush.

Whether people identify it consciously or not, the American people needed Bush to seem leaderly in the face of this tragedy, and he did not. Yeah, righties are still trying to make excuses, and maybe even sort of succeeding -- the conventional wisdom seems now to see it as a "failure at both a national and a local level."

But. The important thing is that the bulk of public support for Bush was based on a purely irrational, purely emotional investment in seeing him as a strong, manly leader who would take care of us. Katrina got that illusion all muddy. One it was tarnished, people took another look and --

      Started to see things differently.

      •  Katrina was a major wake up for most Americans (none)
I think it was also a combination of:

        • Social Security
        • Gas prices
        • A war that seems to have no end
        • Torture stories
        • Unemployment and underemployment (not reflected in the GOP happy stats)
        • Katrina right there on your TV for all to see
        • and so on.
