  •  Even so... (none)
    1. campaigns do not (or have not up to now) paid for these organizing expenditures. Individuals and independent groups have. How can such a setup be a corruption of the process?

    2. even if campaigns DID set up and pay for these services for their adherents, HOW IS THAT A BAD THING?  The problem in politics is the big-money=big-influence. If your campaign pays to organize a million citizens, you have empowered that million, not disempowered them (which is the corruption that campaign finance laws seek to curtail). And, if any of those millions contribute to the campaign, they are subject to the same campaign finance laws as everyone else. So, where's the corruption? Where's the problem?
    •  Well, I am not at all sure (none)
Your first point is true. I was under the impression that the campaign did pay meetup for their services. That was the basis of the Dean campaign.

And my problem is that this wouldn't be counted as a contribution. Say George Soros donated to whomever the 2008 nominee is meetup.com services for the entire campaign. Well, this should be construed as a contribution, don't you think? If it is exempt from that status, then all that revenue doesn't count against his total ability to contribute, does it?

      •  MeetUp was free through 2004. (none)
And I have to ask the question again -- if Soros did that, what's the harm?
        •  Because his overall contribution limit (none)
Would be raised, and while for a campaign in general the cost might not be so great, it does significantly alter an individual limit.
