    Jack Lessenberry of the Metro Times theorized that Freman Hendrix lost many of his voters--middle class African Americans, mostly--to the suburbs. They could afford to flee Detroit and its high crime rate and deficient municipal services, leaving poorer residents behind.

    You're absolutely right about transportation. No metropolitan area in America has worse public transportation than Detroit, and that is going to hurt us badly if predictions of peak oil hae any validity to them.
