In a recent diary I tried to make just this point: Fallujah is the paradigm. It was a quiet city in al-Anwar province, when somehow some American contractors got into some sort of trouble, and ended up being hung from a bridge, and being showed on Al-Jazeera. It was downhill from there. In the first assault on the city, al-Jazeera showed civilian casualties, and almost got bombed by Bush as a result. Six months later Bush had declared war on Al Anwar, and Fallujah was a smoking "Shake and Bake" ruin. A military victory, and a huge political defeat. Bush/Cheney have no clue.
