  •  Southern Govs v Northern Sens? (none)
There's a lot of historical data on Senators losing and Governors winning. But I'm not so sure about the regional aspect.

Yes, Carter and Clinton won as Southern Govs, Kerry and McGovern lost as Northern Sens.

But FDR won as a Northern Gov, Reagan won as a Western Gov, JFK won as a Norther Sen, no one won (even the nomination) as a Southern Senator.

    Am I forgetting important races?

    •  Well (none)
I dont know if Feingold is technically "northern." He is from the midwest. I dont know if that's what you wee suggesting though, sorry if it wasnt.

      •  Huh? (none)
A state that borders Canada is Northern in any geographic sense of the word.

In any case, it was the diarist's term.

        •  Unfortunately (none)
Having lived here my whole life, I can say that WI does not, in fact, share a border w/Canada.  Check it out: http://maps.google.com/
        •  you're right (none)
it is northern. I just think people think of Wisconsin differently, in a political sense, than NY or MA.

          •  Absolutely... (none)
The Midwest is a lot different than the Northeast.

The whole "we need a Southerner" shit is overrated anyway.  We just need someone who can connect with real voters and who can go to a farm or small town and talk to people and not look ridiclous.

That doesn't take a "Southerner".  Most from the Midwest or Mountain West have do it to get elected in the first place.  Dean could do it.  I'm sure there's others.

      •  Of course, we're "northern" (none)
        to southerners.

        And midwestern to easterners.

Let's keep 'em all guessing as to what we're really up here, out here, etc.

Btw, myself, I love Canada and am glad to share that watery border known as Gitchee Goomee. . . .

    •  That was when the South voted Democratic (none)
After the civil rights movement (which LBJ predicted would lose the South for D's for a generatation---true but an underestimate) things are different.

Realistically, Feingold can never win enough conservative states: he's a liberal, Jewish, legislator.
