  •  Degrees (none)
It's all about degrees of security. We're currently at such a low level, there's nowhere to go but upwards! Hope that makes you feel better...

Joan's Optical Scan idea is one good step towards verification ability.  So called paper trails can serve as placebos, and only tell you what the vote was at the polling place and not what get's spit out later at the County by the tabulator, esp. with GEMS hidden second column giving the Final Report tallies. But they can help a few degrees.

There are lots of increments and degrees we can improve upon bit by bit without a total overhaul. We will need all the human resources we can get though to help out for 2006.

It's like if your bank decided to put all the customers' deposit cash out in boxes on a big table in the center of the bank-- with NO Security Guards or personnel to watch over it, only an occasional teller to glance over every now and then.

If you lived in Mayberry you might not be too troubled or inconvenienced by it.  But we aren't in Kansans anymore and Mayberry was a fictional community... We are presently kind of at that level of security in election systems.  The money is sitting out on the table in the middle of the room.  And we just get to hope there aren't any crooks or liars in the room.

Those who insist that- despite the built in capacity for fraud, the program design intended for fraud--  that no one has committed any fraud simply because we don't yet have that video of Karl Rove rigging the tabulator... aren't being realistic, I think.
