Anything Bush male or female attend is, by nature of their attendance, political.

Publically refusing to attend such an event is, IMNSHO, a worthy form of dissent.

In fact, it is probably a better and more effective form of dissent than all those "No W", "Buck Fush", and "Not My President", shirts and buttons one sees everywhere in metropolitan areas.

Mind you, it seems like this actually happened over a year ago, so perhaps it isn't quite as newsworthy as at first glance...

You want to downsize the government?
Fuck you. My government defends the American people.

"Anything Bush male or female attend is, by nature of their attendance, political."

that's simply not true, it shows a lack of understanding of public life. i can't help you with such ignorance. the event was not to promote republican party or republican policies, it was not funded by republican party etc. you could just as well have been on here moaning if NO democrats were invited, "BUSH screens writers/artists for political beliefs before inviting them"

if sharon olds wants to self-censor an opportunity to address huge audience at a literary festival because she can't deal with Laura Bush presence, then fine, it's hardly worth saluting.

as for the notion, as another poster put it that "shiny knives" is so literary and devastating, ahem, you obviously need little to impress you. the Eagles had same line better!

"They stab it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast"
