    I don't think Richardson was voicing support for democracy at the end of the gun, but rather the pressure and prodding towards reform in many nations.

    Self-determination of peoples was historically very successful.  If it wasn't for the U.S. prodding Great Britain and France during and after World War II dozens, if not a hundred of the nations of the world would not even be nominally independent.  Some would argue that western domination keeps these nations down (I would) but I think it would interesting to pose what would be if the U.S. hadn't of made a stand.

    I found this quote interesting: "Our policy of democracy should be, that we will support with the power of the UN all democratic nations."

    Could you let me know how that is mutually exclusive with diplomatic pressure or economic sanctions?
