  •  The problem with those categories (none)
    is that they tend to be used to refer to people -- the entirety of their identity -- rather than to their words and actions.  

    IOW, the same person can be in different categories with respect to different actions, talks, or positions.  The more they're in a single category consistently (e.g. Feingold or Dean, new, Lieberman, craven sellout), the more it's accurate to classify them as such as a general matter.

    But it may be more confusing than helpful to put people in specific overarching categories based essentially on their words or actions with respect to a single issue.  

    Kerry's problem is much less ideological or philosophical than that the guy has very little instinct for how to function effectively in a political forum these days -- that it's far less about policy nuances than it is about framing.  Democrats who approach the world as a policy wonk only are doomed, regardless of their ideology.
