    with the slippery slope argument you introduce re: the government eventually requiring pregnant women to register with the government to give weekly progress reports, etc.

    After all, we have child abuse laws that don't require parents to provide weekly status reports to the government. Thuse, this type of potential intrusiveness does not automatically follow.

    You are very right, however, to suggest that this is a difficult situation.

    At risk of being too legalistic, perhaps the standard for prosecuting women for "continuing child abuse" (i.e. defects the child must live with after birth) could be a much higher standard than simply "negligence" -- something like a "knowingly, with intent to injure" standard that would exempt women with drug addiction that had little or no control over their drug use.

    This type of approach may be rife with problems itself, but I'm just throwing it out there.

    Democrats will fight for a Renewed Deal with the American people.
