    I like governments, and political parties, that are open, transparent, and honest. If a party leader wants to dictate who gets the nomination, go ahead and appoint that person. It may not be open, but at least it is honest. Otherwise, the powers-that-be should not only involve the riding association, but should also ensure that the departing MP announces she isn't running again in a public way, as early as possible. That way, ordinary members of the party who aren't on the executive also get the chance to seek the nomination.

    Thanks for the correction about Michael Ignatieff's condo location--ah, of course, he didn't know until this week which riding he would be parachuting into.
