    It occurs to me that this ruling, far from being a "shit ruling" or an acquittal on a technicality, may actually be a beautiful thing. Earle does not need the conspiracy charge to get DeLay, hence, it's of dubious value anyway.

    But by agreeing to the rest of the indictment the judge has effectively halted the most obvious smear tactic in its tracks: he has demonstrated bipartisan objectivity. Now, this may or may not reflect the best interpretation of how the conspiracy law applies to electoral situations, but it certainly takes the wind out of the swift-boats sails.
