  •  It's still bullshit (none)
Look, Chile under Lagos negotiated and signed a bilateral free trade deal with the United States. They beat Central America to it.

The economic policy of the Concertacion government, since they kicked out Pinochet in 1989, has been to follow his economic policies -- almost to the letter. The only change -- the only change -- has been to devote a slight bit more funding to social programs, but despite making real progress in combatting absolute poverty, Chile still has the most unequal distribution of income in Latin America.

They've had a "Socialist" government for six years, for god's sakes! Schools are still underfunded, a majority of the population has inadequate health care, and most people have pension plans that will pay them below-poverty-level wages after they retire. All this while setting the highest GDP growth rates in Latin America, and among the highest in the world -- for the last sixteen years!

Bachelet promises no changes in economic policy. In fact, the Christian Democrats in her coalition would never vote for her if she pursued any radical changes.

I'm sorry, Chris. You apparently don't know anything about Chile, and your diary really paints a very, very wrong picture of what happened there yesterday.

      Don't incinerate.

You make valid points. The topic of popular leftism being coopted by two-faced usurpers is a critical issue around the world, in the US as well.

But troll-rating and flames? That "North" Americans are taking a positive interest in Latin American for the first time since the Contra/Sandinista conflict was buried, is a good thing. Think a snideness assault on people playing catch-up is going to enhance that?

      •  I didn't troll-rate (none)
I gave him a 1, because I think the diary is unproductive. Bad information sometimes is worse than no information at all, and Chris -- a diarist whose work I generally respect -- is giving completely misleading information here.

I'm serious. This diary for me is right up there with the no-jet-at-the-Pentagon diaries. Completely wrong.

        •  Okay Listen (3.85)
You may hale from a small distant sphere where people have far more knowledge about these matters than they do in the US generally. Good for you, but come down to Earth, USA.

Let me tell you I've got a very intelligent cousin in her second year of Latin American Studies. She took a year off and toured Brazil, and is for little difference it makes half-Brazilian. She goes to NYU. We have a very progressive family, he dad went to Harvard and knows a lot.

But the only thing she knows about Chavez, let alone Obrador or Morales or de Silva, or even the topic of banana republicanism in general, I've had to tell her myself.

So I don't know what your standard for "common knowledge" about Latin America is but it is way out of reach of the typical intelligent and inquisitive American. I have tried to raise awareness myself here... You might be able to take factual exception to something in this diary...

The point is that you should recognize the dearth of knowledge and do more positive stuff about it. It's depressing as Hell, but at least the willingness to improve is there. Someday we might even get over the idea that the entirety south of the Rio Grande is more than our cultural cesspit where lives trade at approximately 400/1 their American value.
