  •  my problem with nuclear power (none)
I have no doubt it is technologically possible to build clean, safe reactors.

I have SERIOUS doubts that for-profit corporations will build them with no shortcuts, or that government will regulate them properly.

    That's it, in a nutshell.

Why is security or morality an either/or question?

    •  One of my problems as well ... (none)
...and a reason that we want enhanced inspections and regulation across the energy spectrum. (This assumes, in the nuclear power arena, that the demo-nuke we propose will lead to more nukes being built, something I seriously doubt and hope will not happen.)
    •  You should talk to Dan about this (none)
The nice thing about pebble-bed reactors is that the safety control device is a pressure blow-off valve- something we've been building for like 200 years, ever since we started playing with steam engines in a serious way.  We're not talking about complicated safety systems (like with 3 Mile Island), we're talking about highschool shop level of complexity here.

Nuclear power plants will still need oversight and regulation- but they'll need a heck of a lot less, and need to spend a heck of a lot less, for a much wider safety margin.
