  •  I wasn't aware (none)
of the bird problem, but thanks for the tip - I'm going to go back to the original diary and check out those links.

And it's great to contact someone else who's aware about bats. Are you a member of Bat Conservation International? If not, you should consider joining. Membership fee is nominal, and they're doing good work, both educational and research. My husband and I were nominated for membership by a friend, half as a joke (we used to throw an awesome annual Halloween party), and got our bat consciousness raised.

Unfortunately our neighbors (we live in an urban co-op apartment) shot down our proposal for a rooftop bat house, and it's a real shame; we're close to a park that has good bat conditions, and in recent years we've been seeing fewer and fewer of them there.

    •  Not 'highly' aware ... (none)
But am interested in virtually everything and anything ... picked up re bats simply at a local bird shop that is run by (HIGHLY) green people.  They were selling bat houses ... and I asked why ... was a very pleasant and education killing of a half-hour.  And, then read a little more ...

Here is a nice little item from National Wildlife Federation on why (and how) to build a bat house.

While mine is physically in a great location (slight southeast, 15 feet up on side of house, with good exposure), so far have gotten no bats to reside in it. (I have no 'water source' right by the house and am reluctant to put in a water bath due to the serious Tiger Mosquito levels in my area along with West Nile virus.  With three little kids, I don't like the idea of creating mosquito breeding grounds.)  In any event, I am hoping that some will find this a good home by next summer ...

      •  I don't think (none)
the water source has to be that close. The pond in the park I mentioned is about 1/4 mile from my house, and my impression is that's close enough; of course I've still got the neighbors to contend with.

Do you live in an arid area? Because if not, there may be a water source nearby that you haven't thought of. In any event, I hope you get some "tenants" soon; do you know how many mosquitos a bat can suck up every day?
