    They didn't attack us, we attacked them. For over a decade prior we'd been there "advising" with a bunch of soldiers as well as CIA/MI guys, and when that turned out not to be enough to keep the colonial puppet govt in power, we went with our battleships and ran them up and down the coast into North Vietnamese waters to try to provoke an incident.

    When they didn't quite oblige, we just made one up anyway. Claimed they shot at us and so now we had to go to war (openly, finally, that is).

    That was the Tonkin Gulf incident. Walter Cronkite revisited it just about a year ago, even, talked explicitly about the lies and what we know now of it.
