Truly, did anyone really believe that Congresspeople actually have the time to read every last detail? Maybe I'm an apologist, but I was proud of John Conyers in F 9/11 for being unafraid to state what common sense should've indicated to all of us.

Not reading every detail is not the same as allowing for bad legislation to pass, you know? In the case of the Patriot Act, they did the latter. But in the context of our national environment (remember all those flags, all those America-firsters flowing out of the woodwork? Hell, even I had a flag decal on my car for a time) it wasn't conducive to voting against it when most of your constituents were in support of it.

Those of us who initially responded to 9/11 with extreme fear and overzealous patriotism are just as guilty for passing the Patriot Act as those who signed off on it. We helped create the necessary enviroment, after all.
