  •  NPR had a story about a guy who bought a cyclotron (none)
from Johns Hopkins University to develop radioactive isotopes in Alaska for cancer cures (Isotopes have a short shelf life and there are no other sources for the isotopes within Alaska according to NPR).  He got all the permits, and was ready to install it in his house when the neighbors complained. NIMBY. Homeland Security had not even thought about regulating cyclotrons.  Wonder if they have ever monitored downwind of Lawrence Livermore Labs?
    •  Good story (none)
I am sure that in today's radio-phobic cultural environment, Madame Curie would have been shut down long before she could have made her ground-breaking discoveries.  It would appear from reading this thread that even a progressive, supposedly thoughtful community (i.e., DK) has unthinkingly had a kneejerk ban-everything-radioactive reaction that puts a whole class of compounds off limits to amateur scientists and inventors.  Oh well, as long as we're safe from Mr. Bush's Boogeyman-Terrorists it's well worth the cost . . .
