  •  My Aunt (none)
in Sarasota, Fl (I'm in WV), and I have exchanged a few heated email conversations in the past. this christmas I instigated the conversation.
I sent an email to a few friends and family members about the budget cuts to student loans, medicare/caid, single-mother childcare. Then I pointed out the disconnect between the cuts and the $70 billion proposed tax cuts and asked what was wrong with this picture.
I got a thouroughly nasty response from the aforementioned aunt. "How do you think those women became single mothers in the first place...You libs just don't get it, get off your ass and get a job."
After an equally heated response from me - pointing out that not all single mothers are irresponsible sluts and that perhaps students recieving loans from the government shouldn't be considered lazy fat-asses, and that minimum wage is below the poverty line - I recieved an email rebuking me for expressing my views to her.
It always amazes me how no matter what my aunt says or how nastily she says it, I am always the one responsible for the tone of our political discourse. Also, I've expressed a desire to have an ongoing political discussion with her, an attempt to discover how someone can look at the same world I'm looking at and come up with such completely different conclusions, if we tone down the rhetoric on both our parts. But she is not willing to here anything opposing her point of view. It really scares me when we get to a point where people don't even want to try to understand each other.
