  •  Not sure I agree with "shameful" (4.00)
I certainly don't want to line up with a policy poisiton that authoritarian regimes are a good thing, do you?  Its one thing to say they should be reformed or replaced, another thing entirely to propose the use of armed troops to make it happen.

    There is a difference.

    •  authoritarian "regimes" (4.00)
Note the PLURAL.  Except for Iraq, I don't see Bush lifting a finger to overturn authoritarian regimes in the Middle East.

When I see Bush pushing real democracy in Saudi Arabia, I'll be impressed.  And taking credit for their own internal reforms doesn't count.

      •  Looking for Bush to approve (4.00)
reform in Saudi Arabia will give you serious eye strain.  I recommend watching the night sky for flying pigs instead  :-)
      •  Well the theory is (none)
That successfully democratizing Iraq will put pressure on those regimes to modernize.  But you knew that.  You don't agree, which is what the majority of the country thinks...  did you have to bring it up though?  Richardson's a good gov, 08 contender, and he's ONE OF OUR GUYS.  Can't anyone mention any democrat on this board without someone flipping out over something they once said that could be construed as support for the war?  And over such a mild statement.  Yeah, go feingold, if he's got supporters like you he's in great shape.
    •  Dictatorships (4.00)
Bush believes in dictatorships, not democracies, but he likes the pretense of elections.  The scolding Rice gives to our authoritarian allies is just window-dressing to make it appear that Bush really means to promote democracy in the Middle East, his latest excuse for the Iraq invasion.

Didn't Mubarack just throw in jail the one guy that might have given him or his kid a run for his money in the Egyptian presidential election?  What is Rice saying about this after praising Mubarek for letting other people run for president?
