  •  I have a hard time believing (none)
that a lot of these people actually believe the bullshit they spew.  I suspect many of them, Pat Robertson included, with his civil war prolonging deal for Liberian diamonds, are in it for the money.  This guy seems like a classic huckster.  Do they have no conscience?

has been corrected so many times by religious and mainstream scientific authorities that it's pretty tough to believe he really buys into his own claims.

And that, of course, makes it all right.

Seriously, though, I think a true believer might not be swayed by empirical arguments.  If you believe in an all-powerful god, then Last Thursdayism is possible, if not probable.

(And by the way, DS -- love the science threads.  Keep 'em coming.)

      •  Oh faith, where art thou? (none)
Harder to beleive still that there are those who actually do believe this way. Someone I know casually (where I work) mentioned that the very notion of evolution was an abomination, and there is good proof that the earth is not more than 6000 years old, and this from a respected manager. Talk about a conversation killer - how do you answer in a non-career limiting way? Not going to agree, not going to call you a moron.

Maybe this is the same 35% or so that still believes Bush is a great president, but they are firm in their belief and there is no changing it. Let's pull a Rove (sans evil) by not clashing over science at all, but rather make a different argument on their own ground; that by seeking to prove creationism scientifically (even in a pseudo sense) is an admission that they have no faith. For it is by faith that true believers find resoution.

This is where I expect the current "Awakening" to lead: people are going to be getting in trouble, not from the government, but from other people, for not having the right beliefs.

I just expect the government to go way slow on the civil-rights prosecutions.

This is really creepy.  What if your boss decided to fire you because you're a heathen, and the government didn't care?

That would be a hell, to be sure.

that's certain a case of an employer canning an employee.  But it's a political thing, there.

I'm worried when it gets down to the level of your local Starbuck's manager firing people because they're not christian enough, or not christian in the right way.  That's going to suck.

I don't think "suck" covers it... but I'm at a loss for a better word myself. Perhaps something from Kafka would get the idea across...
