  •  As a Christian, and an advocate of science (4.00)
I am both amused and embarrassed by this sort of nonsense emerging from people of faith.

My nick is derived from Blaise Pascal, another scientist who saw no discongruities between faith and science.  The miracles of Christ do not require me to abandon one whit of rationality:  Joseph Campbell says myth is the armor truth has always worn to survive the centuries.  My Christianity is a lifestyle of (admittedly imperfect) emulation of the life of Jesus Christ, whose message was the Kingdom of God is within you, and who reached out to the rejected of the world, notably to women and children.  If anything, my faith calls me to a ruthless conformity to the realities of the world as it is, and be called, as he was, a Friend of Sinners.

While I am sure it is only an odd set of coincidences, and nobody should ever treat a book of poetry and mythology as a science textbook, I have destroyed several creation science types ( the precursors of today's ID types ) with Genesis 1.  Conformal to every respectable scientific theory, the universe begins with light.  The first nine verses describe the creation of spacetime, the hadrons and bosons, atoms and the expanding universe.  Genesis 1 goes on to show life beginning simply, as everyone accepts.  Oddly, the stars appear later than than the inception of life, for the atmosphere would not have cleared until the early life forms had converted Earth's thick and poisonous early atmosphere to an clear oxygen-rich mix.  Life begins in the sea, moves to the land.... about this time, they're horribly confused and generally put their fingers in their ears and loudly sing LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!

Such fun I've had with these types.  If, as Genesis tells us, mankind was created in the image of God, it behoves us as his creation to at least wrestle with the problems of understanding it.  The hubristic presumption that God Almighty gave the blueprints to the universe in 41 verses of poetry is more than silly, it flies in the face of God's own mandate for man.  The universe obeys rules, we do not obey God's own rules.  Let these Creation Scientists and ID cretins turn their minds to the problems of evil and stupidity in the world, which occupies the rest of the Bible, and leave science to the scientist.

People are usually more convinced by reasons they discovered themselves than by those found by others.
