The GOP knew whover they put up was going to look like a turkey after Clinton so they had to try to tear him down and now they can use the excuse, that I have heard several times already, "the nation can't handle two impeachments in a row. The instability will kill the markets and capital will flee like this is some banana republic."

My wife and I discussed this very issue: "impeachment fatigue." Back-to-back impeachments would make us start to look like the Roman Republic, where treason prosecutions were a weapon of choice in settling scores with political enemies.

My question is,aren't we basically in the same historical, moral and social position that Rome was in during its early decline?  We haven't got to the point of assassinations of political opponents yet, but if Hillary gets nominated, all bets are off - the crazy right wing will go nuts.  Character assassination by the Rovians has been going on for at least two decades.  Financial attacks will be next, then the "Accidents", suicides", and some form of exile.  We are not immune.

        •  Not to the point of assasinations???? (none)

I'd say we're in the full swing of decline right about now.  The right doesn't even have to kill their opponents, they just use their propaganda apparatus to assassinate their character.

but it seems that the character assassination, the "unpatriotic liberal" slur is pretty much the same thing as the old Roman trick of accusing your opponents of being impious, and not attending to cult duties.  The real assassinations that may come are those where everyone knows who did it, but nothing is done because they are the Emperor or some such.  This stage really didn't semm to get going until the power of the Roman Senate had been beaten into nothingness.  Are we there yet?  I hope not

-get used to it. If god willing a Dem is elected president, the Repubs will IMMEDIATELY begin bogus investigations and impeachment hearings. Rove may be phoning it in from a jail cell, but swift boat tactics are just starting to escalate into politics-as-usual. What people refer to as "The Lewinsky Scandal" started as the whitewater investigation. It's like the Dems investigating Arbusto 20 years post-facto, then impeaching Bush for lying about what's in his sock drawer.
Impeachment fatigue not withsatnding, it will happen to dems regardless. Reps have made politics a street brawl, but we have real legit grounds for impeachment procedings- they need a kick in the balls.
