I did a remodel to a flat roof school building that was designed in 1962. It is a steel frame building, with bar joists for the roof members supporting a tectum roof. There was no insulation - it was 1962, and heating oil was 15 cents a gallon (the school used to use 7000 gallons a year). Someone added insulation above the ceiling, and so the snow that was designed to melt off no longer did.

Was this the designer's fault? Today, I would say they should have been more farsighted. We added more roof framing as required - by an engineer and the state code.

so many of the bad examples of modernism were really cautionary tales of what happens when you think an oil-based economy will last forever.

Have you ever looked at the Los Angeles case study houses?  Appropriate for the climate, I think, as long as you don't mind the sun.  I had a first year studio instructor that made us design on the CS grid over and over and over.....

Here in the SF Bay Area there are many Eichlers.  Poorly built, in many instances, but fun to look at.  Especially when no one's "updated" them with French provincial kitchen cabinetry and wall-to-wall.

I live in a building built in 1922 and don't mind the Victorian/Edwardian mix you see so much of here, but because I see so much of it and so little modern architecture what little 1920s-60s modern architecture I do see is refreshing. Funny thing is, it's my opinion that outside of period housing, there's not a lot of great architecture in SF.
