    you're just silly or stupid.

Look dude, get it straight:  being a bit of a centrist contrarian does not make you a right-wing tool.  I'm about as far from the current Republican party ideologically as the next Democrat.

rather than addressing the issue. How is the president's actions, going around the executive and the legislative branches, just nibbling at the "margins" of liberty???

Republicans to Americans: "Are there no prisons?...And the Union workhouses?...Are they still in operation?"

Hey you're the one who called ME a RedStater, remember?

But back to the original point: my belief is that there has been a huge amount of hyperbole on the issue or security vs. civil liberties.  Certainly on the right, there are those who are willing to ALWAYS prioritize security over civil liberties.  The Bush apologists at National Review or Powerline just shrug their shoulders at the thought of warrantless searches.  On the left however, people seem to equate warrantless searches or terror suspects with the imposition of martial law and the assumption of dictatorial powers.

Don't get me wrong: I'm dead against conducting wiretaps or other searches with no oversight.  But let's be clear here.  The vast majority of Ameican liberties and protections are intact and doing just fine.  I haven't seen too many government goons arresting people for criticizing the government.  I haven't seen anyone but a few hundred terror suspects have their due process rights affected.  Again, I oppose these actions.  They are wrong and have undermmined support for dealing with the real security challenges we face.  I'm just unwilling to call this "suspension of the Constitution" or any of the other hyperbolic phrases used, and I suspect the vast majority of the Ameican people would agree with me.
