    This is a pretty common situation, I think.    

    Some families can compartmentalize politics, fighting like cats and dogs over political topics without really 'fighting' (this is my family).  

    Some families can't, and if personal boundaries and respect can't be maintained then it's probably best to either stay away from politics or, if that's not possible, stay away from the family.

    As far as staying away from politics goes, you can only control your own conversational contribution --  you can't control your dad's.   If you avoid the political and he still feels it necessary to goad you then maybe you can try simply not participating in the conversation.   He might get bored with one-way conversations.  If that doesn't do the trick, then you might want to stay away for a while.   No need to subject yourself to someone else's unprovoked hostility on a regular basis.
