    I've thought him sort of subpar for a while now.  

    All that said, there's a basic truth here people are missing: Massaging the press, rather than holding them at arm's length, works.  Quite well, in fact.  People are always more inclined to respond better to a seat at the table than they will to having to wait in the hall.

    There's a lesson here for us this year, and in 2008.   Access creates a useful atmosphere.  We need to welcome the press.  We need to be their best friends.  Bring 'em in and let 'em know they're important - they sure feel that they are.

    And at the end of the day, in fact, they are.  They can't outright break you, but they can sure grease the skids for your descent.  They can also help flatten out some of those uphill runs.

    If you vote Republican, you vote for corruption.
