and I think it should be mentioned that the reason Republicans and conservatives don't care about public education is because they believe that you should only have access to the education you can afford. In their view, federal grants are helping people that don't deserve help because they are where they are in society because they aren't as disciplined/talented/successful as others. And you know the conservative mantra is that if you help someone achieve something they couldn't achieve on their own, then it promotes laziness and lack of work ethic.

    Same with healthcare, etc.

...who is a die-hard Rethug.  He is furious at the state U system that is toying with the idea of an income-based tuition system.  I thought his head was going to explode.

He basically said that this was "communistic rape" and that he fully expects to be asked at the grocery store what his income is and then be charged accordingly.  I guess he sees education as a commodity, like apples.  I don't think that it is a common good like that.

I told him as far as I knew universities always had programs for the less fortunate (grants, scholarships, work-study).  And, oh, yeah...don't you think an educated populace is in your best interest?

      I guess not.

      •  rights? what rights? (none)
If we don't have rights to health care, we sure as heck don't have rights to a competative education.....HA!
