  •  He does this all the time, (4.00)
pretends to be contemplative so that he can claim it was a tough decision when he votes with the President, he learned the strategy from McCain.

Remember the kiss. Lieberman wants to be Secretary of Defense and isn't about to rock that gravy train.

    •  really? (none)
U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, D-Conn., insisted Monday that were President Bush to ask him to replace Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, he would not accept the appointment.

"No, I'm not interested in that," Lieberman said in a Journal Inquirer interview, adding that he is instead devoted to winning a fourth term in the election next November. . . .

Lieberman's status as one of the Republican administration's favorite Democrats even sparked reports that Bush has considered naming him to succeed Rumsfeld, himself the target of severe criticism for his handling of the Iraq war.

But Lieberman, who by breakfasting with Rumsfeld at the Pentagon last month fed such speculation, dismissed the notion as "one of the Washington myths that come up from nowhere that I know about."

Nevertheless, Lieberman acknowledged that he had expected Bush to dump Rumsfeld. "I was surprised that there wasn't a change in the administration," he said, referring to reports over the last two months that Bush would sack Rumsfeld by the start of the year. Asked if he were disappointed that the embattled defense secretary remained on the job, Lieberman reiterated that he was "surprised."

    •  Gravy Train? (none)
That train only runs for the next three years.  The Senate seat is his as long as he wants it.

      •  Ah, but think long term. (4.00)
A segue to DoD now would translate into millions in post-2008 income.

        •  He's probably covered from that angle (none)
If he left the Senate he'd have plenty of corporate boards ready to offer lucrative seats.
