  •  This is what I have always wondered (4.00)
People are claiming that Alito is an easy walk to confirmation regardless of what happens.

Democrats still only need 40 to filibuster; they can get that.

Frist needs 50 to nuke; he has not proven he could get that, and his hand is weaker now than it was last time! How can we NOT filibuster?

I tell you there is a fire. They have this day set a blazing torch to the temple of constitutional liberty and, please God, we shall have no more peace forever.

    •  Media bias (none)
One of the manifestations of the corporate media's bias is in what they predict.  According to them, everything is going to be a challenge for Democrats, everything Dems do is going to make them unpopular, Dems can always be expected to lose unless some strange big thing happens.  And the opposite of all these for the GOP of course.

This is what I have noticed.

      •  Example: Blitzer asking Schumer 01-11-06 (none)
... about Democrats being "outside the mainstream" on Roe vs. Wade. Schumer reminded him that 70% of the public do not want Roe overturned.
The hooey about wingnuts representing Real American moral values is a mutually-stroking rightward swing of media and GOP.
Dems can filibuster scAlito more easily than the GOP has the votes to confirm, or to nuke the Senate in a constitution gutting tantrum..
Which handful of Sens would want to nuke the constitution over a wholly inappropriate candidate like scAlito? And have THAT as their legacy in the history books?

If the wingnut cause is just, why all the weaseling? Anyone? Bueller? scAlito?

    •  Very true (none)
It's all up to the Democrats...

Alito will get out of the Judiciary Committee (unless he says something extraordinarily stupid in the next couple of days).  Therefore there's only one real vote left, for cloture.

Will Frist be able to get 50 votes to invoke the "nuclear" option?  Some of the Republicans have to be thinking that the next time the Democrats have the Senate they'll probably really regret the nuclear option.
